From: VNault7500@aol.com On cold Sunday, March 16, 1997, we sat anxiously waiting for the guest of honor to step out and start talking. What fun would it be to begin with the guest? First we must play games. It was entertaining, but the audience wanted to see HIM. Finally, the games ended. We were told it would be 30 minutes. People got up, wandered to the only dealer booth, spent money and chatted. The time was difficult to sit through. We waited and waited. Finally we were told to take our seats. "Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm WI, Packer city, welcome to Mr. John DeLancie." The announcer declared. The audience naturally agreed. A thunderous applause erupted. Mr. DeLancie stepped out from behind a door and waved to the crowd. He made his way the few inches to the stage and stood there for a few minutes. "I’m waiting for the flashes," he declared. Naturally 40 or 50 cameras instantly flashed a way. "There they are," he continued, "Okay. What do you want to know? Ask me anything." "What did you think of being on the other series?" "Deep Space 9 was OK." DeLancie informed everyone. "Voyager was a lot of fun because of Kate. Well then the others as well." When people asked about how DeLancie felt being the most powerful creature in the universe, DeLancie was quick to say he felt he was most powerful prier to the role. He also claimed he acted as if the character was too stupid to know he was opnipatent. Delancie stated that working on Days of Our Lives was more fun than working on Star Trek for the simple reason that he spent more time working on Days. He had more invested. He was able to improvise. His reasons for leaving were simple as well. He left because he didn’t enjoy working on Days anylonger. It became routine. Returning to the audience for questions, DeLancie picked a gentleman sitting in the middle section. The gentleman began by saying, "At the risk of getting plummed when I leave here, I must say I don’t like the character of Q because..." Before he could continue there was a loud intake of breath from the people around. DeLancie smiled but then pointed in the direction and directed, "Get him. Get him!" But he was quick to remind us that he didn’t write the lines, it was his job to "turn shit into shinola." When asked about if people recognized him in public, DeLancie said, "A lot of people see me as Q and not as much as John DeLancie. Most of the people recognize me as an actor and they say ‘he’s an actor. Where do I know him from?’." The audience wanted to know how to get passed certain parts of the game. DeLancie smiled. He admitted that he had one of the first copies of the game but it was disrupting his house. "My wife would come home and hear me voice. She would think I was home or I’d be working downstairs in my office and I’d hear my voice coming from upstairs. Very unnerving." He shared a story about the game that took place at his house. He was working and his two sons, 12 and 14 came to get him. " ‘Dad,’ they said, ‘you have to help us get past this part’. I refused but they persisted and soon I found myself in the living room watching the boys play this game. You know when you get it wrong and I say... Oh what do I say. ‘Oh you stupid people can’t you do anything right. Do it again.’ Well my boys did it again. and got "oh you stupid people... Oh you stupid people... oh you stupid." Finally they both turned to ME. To ME and said ‘ You are so annoying!’." Someone asked "Why do you always harass the captains of starships and put them into danger?" His simple answer was, "Because they’re little babies and they deserve it." Mr. DeLancie is working on a project called Alien Voices. They are audio tapes not video tapes that have famous science fiction reading parts from famous science fiction stories. "If you could remake any film which would you pick?" Was the next question asked. "I’m against remakes and I’ll tell you why. Because if the movie was that good the first time, then the remakes are never as good." When asked why Q put the Enterprise endanger by sending them far into space and introducing them to the Borg, his quick answer was "Being in space is lonely. They needed to meet other people that are out there as well." "If you claim people are so stupid and they are babies, why do you always want to join them?" Someone else asked. "Well I wanted to join LA Law first, but they wouldn’t let me. So, then I went to the other shows and they didn’t want me. I made my way around the shows you know, so I ended up on Star Trek and they didn’t want me, so..." DeLancie was quick to point out that he wasn’t good in school. He started acting when he was 14 years old. He said his best year in school was "5 ‘Fs’ and a ‘D’. I got the ‘D’ in geography." He explained that he was sent to a different school and there his teacher gave him Henry V and told him he was going to do it. "And for the first time in my life I was good at something." He explained that his parents stopped thinking of the original jobs such as doctors and layers and started to think of the unthinkable job of being an actor. He also added that he grew up in Philly. When asked what his favorite role was, he said it was playing Jake Tanner in Man of Superman. DeLancie clamed he was born to play the part. Why did he say that? He says it was the most challenging role because he had problems learning lines. In that play, he camin in during the first 10 minutes of the play and talked basically for the next 3 to 4 hours. The part gave him nightmares. He stopped working on everything else and just learned lines for a month. When asked about what projects he’s been working on DeLancie said he just finished a role in "the Practice" and "Spy Game" as well as a movie called "Quality Time". He said "I think I’ll be shooting a show in a few days." He has also been narrating for concerts. He’ll be in the Milwaukee area in Sept. but he couldn’t remember what concert they would be doing. And added to all of that, He teaches acting. A young man asked, "Have you ever thought there was a being called Q that chose you to play Q to prepare the world for his coming?" DeLancie found it necessary to have the question repeated a few times and then he repeated it back to the speaker before turning to the intire audience and saying it again. His answer was, "Yes and he speaks to me often." When asked what he would change about the character, DeLancie said he wouldn’t change the character. The character is based on a level of unprodictory. He would change the amount of times "I got to come up to bat. Instead of 10 times playing Q, what if I had 100." When asked if he would rather be a regular human or Q, he answered, "A regular human being. Darn I meant Q." He asked the children why they liked Q. Most of them said because he has power. It didn’t surprise DeLancie in the least. He went on to explain about when he was potty training his son. He asked his son, "Kegan, why are you wearing 3 pairs of underwear?" and the little boy answered "Because it gives me power." DeLancie claims, "I don’t think we ever outgrow that." Someone asked if he beat out any famous actors for the role of Q. Naturally, DeLancie needed to answer with, "Well De Niro was there." Then he went on to explain that he really didn’t know. When asked if he was a fan of Star Trek, DeLancie said, "Not particularly." DeLancie explained how he’s never been much of a television watcher. He says he’s never been one to rush back home because a certain show is on. When asked about becoming an icon, DeLancie said he "had a taste of it on Days, but it’s amazing there is all this, (referring to the group of people that were in attendance)" He said "Roddenberry told me when I first accepted the part, ‘You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.’ and I really had no idea what I gotten myself into." When asked what he does in his spare time, DeLancie said he reads mostly nonfiction historical books and I sail. DeLancie said he doesn’t enjoy books that are made into movies because there is so much in the imagination that isn’t included in the movie. "The first movie I was ever thrown out of was ‘Mysterious Island’ because the book was so much better and I proceeded to tell everyone." Shortly after DeLancie was stopped. He was asked to pick the door prizes. Saying, "You want to see power?" He pulled out a name then said, "I don’t want that one." and returned it to the box. He repeated it at least once, but then said he would be serious and selected 4 names. Proving he had no phonics training in school, he had a difficult time with last names. Following the door prizes, DeLancie signed autographs and then left the building.
