Now a crippled vegetable, he devoted a short prayer to the memory of this former great, and typed in a command on his keypad. ==cerebral net online== "Activate algorithm Apocalypse-Shaw-Alpha." ==confirmed== "Engage security protocols: Armageddon-Circle-Omega." ==confirmed. owner-level access implemented== "Deactivate cerebral net. Erase all records of user access in the past 24 hours. Activate blanket algorithm: Ministry-of-Truth." ==confirmed== Sebastian Shaw looked at his former ally, and as he walked out of Ship's ward, said "I apologise for this, Xavier. It is for the greater good." ==== In the snowy wastelands of Canada, Jonothon Marken stopped at a vast ice lake. Knowing he had not been followed, he took a small metal spider out of his napsack. He pressed a button on it's base, then slid it a few metres out from the shore. Its legs sunk into the ice, and in a few seconds, the ice erupted in a cascade of shards and water. As Jonothon Marken's face became ghostly pale, his piercing red eyes stared into the murky depths of the lake, searching for home. ==== Somewhere in middle America, a group of twenty heroes struggled across the barren land, desperate to find somewhere to call home. The more able among them were carrying the weak and injured, and those that could were stumbling under their own power. Blink was still comatose, and Callisto would be lucky if she ever walked again. Glow had done his best to heal her, but his powers had never been good with fractures. His speciality was sicknesses. And with no telepaths, Blink was still in a coma from the backlash of her powers during the psi-storm. Forge and Iron Man had been working on the remains of their technology to try and cobble together a transmitter. Both had their equipment desicrated during the battle with the Hellfire Club, and their injuries weren't helping much. Tony's broken ribs were a hinderance, and his preceding heart problems were only adding to his worries. With Forge preoccupied, Daredevil had assumed leadership of this fragment of the Rebellion. As he felt the sun beating down relentlessly, he decided it was time to rest. "All stop!" They wearily slumped onto the earth, tired after days of walking. The few fliers had fared slightly better, but not much. Even Juggernaut, with his newly restored powers, was beginning to tire. Forge and Stark once again huddled over the circuitry they had been carrying, and resumed their work. Despite their expertise, the conditions made it difficult to focus. Daredevil called for Jean and Sean to come over, and discussed their situation. "We've been going for nearly a week now. I think we should assume the worst about the others. If they were able to find us, they would have by now." "I hate to admit it," Sean said wearily, "But yer right. We've got tae try and find somewhere where we can pull oursels tagether." "I agree," replied Daredevil, his voice still confident. "I've been thinking, and the only idea I've got it is a risky one. We know that the Hellfire Club holds its territory with a small task force of slaves and a mutant. With sufficient number, we can pick out this force, before they have a chance to contact their masters." "But are you sure we can carry this out?" Jean asked. "In truth? No. But it's our best hope. I've asked Forge and Tony to work on a magnetic pulse generator, to short out the communications array, and hopefully, the implants in their task force. That leaves one mutant to deal with. Shouldn't be too much." Jean agreed that this was their best hope, then asked, "Who will carry out the strike on the mutant? We can't all barge in or they'll find some way of contacting the others." "True. I plan on using Wilson, LeBeau and Wisdom. All three have stealth skills, and none rely on psi-powers. Hopefully Forge can get Deadpool's teleporter online by then too, so we can port them in and out quickly if necessary." === A few dozen miles away, the rest of the Rebellion were faring slightly better. They had no injured to burden them, and had scavenged what supplies they needed from their former base. They had headed West, where the Hellfire Club had not yet reached. They knew of a few sites where there were still EarthGov strongholds. When Washington was taken over, President Kelly was evacuated to the Western Seaboard, and that was where New Washington had been built. The entire American army protected that area, which up til now had remained safe. Robert Kelly, President of all of EarthGov, had refused offers of aid from the other member nations, like Britain and Russia. He said that America would handle this problem alone. The world had became a strange place after that. Kelly continued to rule EarthGov, overseeing the creation of a orbital defense grid while his own country spun deeper into despair. The Western cities were havens of utopia compared to some of the hellish states the Hellfire Club ruled. When questioned by other nations, he refused to comment. When questioned by his own Senate, he told them that it was hopeless to fight, as the Hellfire Club was too powerful. He said he believed that they would make their stand in New Washington when the time came, alone. No-one dared challenge him, for the control he held over America's fearsome military. He had appointed his own Defense Chief, and only the Hellfire Club could best the US army. No other nation could compete. So, Kelly ruled both America and EarthGov, in a manner that was controversial, but so far had kept those in the West safe. Those that could not, or did not want, to leave their homes, were slaughtered or ruled by the ever expanding Hellfire Club. The Rebellion knew all this, but their only chance was a pact with EarthGov to help protect the West in exchange for a base of operations. === Hundreds of miles away, Essex climbed out of ice cold water, clambering up a rocky shore inside an underwater cave. He looked around at the clawed walls, and began a long trek around several miles of tunnels. "Home", he whispered softly, "Home." === Back in Ship, Sebastian Shaw was in his personal strategy room, overseeing a variety of projects. He watched the training programs of several Marauders, tweaking the holographic environments to his whims. He watched McCoy's lab, seeing the good doctor implanting an unconscious human with cyber-organic enhancements. He was progressing on schedule. Closing these viewing windows, then sealing the door to his chamber, he said. "Computer: engage monitor sequence Magnus-Sabbah-Xavier." ==confirmed== In seconds, three new holographs appeared in front of him; Magneto's chamber, Xavier's ward, and Apocalypse's regeneration capsule. He sat in silence for a few minutes, considering his options. Xavier breathed slow and steady, his eyes still burnt with the image of searing lightning. Apocalypse's chamber hummed incessantly, draining Ship's power to heal its master. Magneto lay asleep, a constant stream of sedative flowed into his arm, keeping him in perpetual slumber. "Suspend algorithm Rock-a-bye. Transfer medicomm control section Magneto-Alpha to codeword: Phoenix." ==confirmed. password access - reference: phoenix - engaged== "Take a mind scan of subject: Magneto." ==confirmed== "Scan for any signs of enhanced brain activity: range 17% differential from human." ==confirmed. scan negative. there is no enhanced brain activity in specified range== "Hmm." Shaw deliberated once more, then entered a final order. "Reactivate algorithm Rock-a-bye, then disengage monitor sequence Magnus-Sabbah-Xavier." ==confirmed== Sebastian Shaw relaxed in his chair, and allowed himself a brief smile, thinking about the plans he had set in motion for the future. ====== The end.
